Around 40 demonstrators gather around banner reading ‘Save Our River’ as start of sewage dump looms
Around 40 people, some carrying a banner reading “Save Our River,” have gathered at the foot of the Mercier Bridge to protest the dumping of eight billion litres of untreated wastewater into the St. Lawrence River.
The City of Montreal is to begin the release of raw sewage around midnight after the controversial plan received the go-ahead from Environment Canada.
Protesters say they hope to stop the dump if possible and one group was headed toward a railway bridge nearby.
Another group was reported to be blocking Route 132 in the direction of the Mercier Bridge.
More to come.
